Parvaah is the social initiative of K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering which started under Symphony in 2015 with the aim of creating awareness and bringing about a change. It is inspired by the philosophy that it is the duty of every individual to contribute towards the society. It was started with a motive to understand that organizing various festivals is not only about fun and frolic but also about spreading a message. Each year KJSCE undertakes social initiatives based on relevant issues in the society.
Year 2015 being the first year, Parvaah took up the cause of Women Safety and associated with the Mumbai Police, the Mumbai Taxi-men Union, Zicom among others to distribute safety kits for Women Safety and to create awareness. By associating Women’s Safety along with Symphony, it created awareness among the 5000+ students that attended Symphony, and thousands of others in various colleges. In 2015, on-ground events like basketball matches and quiz matches for orphaned children during Symphony and Skream(Sports Festival of KJSCE) took place. Parvaah made 1500 Taxi drivers take the pledge to respect and protect women. Dignitaries and celebrities like Devendra Fadnavis, Ranbir Kapoor, Sushant Singh Rajput, Rahul Ram, Kapil Sharma, Sunil Grover, Paresh Ganatra, members of Sparsh, Coshish, Sapan Verma, The Local Train and Kirit Somaiya all pledged to set an example for today’s youth and respect women.
Last year in 2016, Parvaah did on- ground events for children. The Secret Santa campaign, Parvaah’s very first campaign under Symphony 2016, was a huge success. Team Parvaah celebrated Christmas at an orphanage in Mumbai. A Basketball Tournament for Special Children was organized as a part of Parvaah. Along with that, Parvaah cleaned and undertook the beautification of Ghatkopar station.This initiative is backed by Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, Ratan N. Tata, and Amitabh Bachchan. Ghatkopar station was cleaned and the walls along with the staircase were painted to a raise awareness about social issues in the society.
Parvaah has been working for the cause of LGBT Rights for the year 2016 – 2017. This year Parvaah is creating an awareness around this marginalized community of our society. Parvaah is trying to improve the socio- economic status of the members of the LGBT community and to help them gain acceptance within our society. Parvaah associated with the Humsafar Trust and Queer Azaadi Mumbai, by being a part of the pride parade in a bid to change the perspective of the society and stand for the rights of the LGBT community. Parvaah also performed a street play to create awareness regarding LGBT, in various public places. Sensitization Workshops were held with known LGBT activists like Harrish Iyer, Urmi Jadhav and Aaditya Joshi. A lot of other activists and celebrities like Celina Jaitley, Shriram Iyer, Nakshatra Bagwe and Sushant Divgikar supported Parvaah in its initiative.
